Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains what information CaptionGrab ("CaptionGrab", "we", "us") collects when you use captiongrab.com (the "Service"), how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. By using the Service you agree to the practices described here.
The short version: CaptionGrab has no accounts and never asks for your name, email or payment details. To run the tool we process the TikTok links you submit. We also use analytics and error-monitoring services that collect information about your device and how you use the site, including session recordings with typed input masked. The site shows ads through Journey by Mediavine, whose partners may use cookies to show personalized ads; you can opt out through the ad privacy prompt. We do not sell your personal information for money.
Information we collect
TikTok links you submit
When you submit a link, we process it to retrieve the public video's caption, thumbnail and, if you ask for one, a transcript. We do not tie the links you submit to your name or any account. If a request fails, the link may be included in an error report so we can fix the problem.
Clipboard
If you tap Paste, your browser asks for permission to read your clipboard. We read it only at that moment, look for a TikTok link in it, and put that link in the input field. We do not store or transmit any other clipboard contents.
Usage and device information
We use analytics services to understand how the Service is used and to improve it. They collect information such as:
- pages viewed, buttons clicked and features used (for example, whether a caption was fetched or copied),
- approximate location derived from your IP address (country and city level), browser and device type, operating system, screen size and referring website,
- a random identifier stored in your browser so that repeat visits can be recognized,
- session recordings: a replay of how you interacted with a page, such as scrolling, clicks and page changes. Text you type into input fields is masked and not recorded.
Error and diagnostic information
When something goes wrong, our error-monitoring service receives technical details such as the error message, the page, your browser and operating system, your IP address, and the actions that led to the error.
Security checks
To protect the Service from automated abuse, some features use a security check that processes technical signals about your browser and your IP address.
Server and network logs
Our hosting provider processes standard request information (such as IP address, time of request, URL requested and user agent) to deliver the site, prevent abuse and keep it secure.
Information you send us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you include in your message.
How we use information
We use the information above to:
- provide the Service (fetch captions and thumbnails, create transcripts),
- keep the Service secure and prevent abuse, spam and automated misuse,
- find and fix bugs and performance problems,
- understand how the Service is used and improve it,
- respond to your messages, and
- comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.
Transcripts
Transcripts may be produced with the help of third-party artificial intelligence (AI) services. Only the public video's content is used to make a transcript, not information about you. Transcripts may be stored for a limited time so repeat requests are faster, and they are not linked to you.
Cookies and similar technologies
We, our analytics providers and our advertising partners use cookies and browser storage (such as localStorage) to recognize repeat visits, measure usage, keep analytics sessions together, and show and measure ads.
We use Google Analytics, which sets cookies to distinguish visitors and sessions. You can learn how Google uses data from sites that use its services.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, use private browsing, or install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. The core caption tool still works if you block analytics.
We do not currently respond to browser "Do Not Track" signals, because there is no common standard for how to honor them.
Who we share information with
We do not sell your personal information for money. Our advertising partner, described under Advertising below, may use cookies and similar technologies to show personalized ads, which some laws treat as a "sale" or "sharing" of personal information. Otherwise, we share information only with service providers that help us run the Service, and only as needed for the purposes above. These fall into the following categories:
- Hosting, content delivery and security providers, which receive request data, IP addresses and security-check signals.
- Analytics providers (including Google Analytics), which receive usage and device information and session recordings (typed input masked).
- Advertising partners (Mediavine and its ad partners), which receive device, browser and usage information, IP addresses and cookie identifiers to show and measure ads.
- Error-monitoring providers, which receive error reports, including browser details and IP addresses.
- AI service providers, which receive public video content to produce transcripts.
- TikTok, which receives requests for the public videos you submit.
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the rights, safety or property of CaptionGrab, our users or others, or as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, in which case this policy continues to apply to the transferred information.
Advertising
The Service shows ads through Journey by Mediavine. Mediavine and its advertising partners may collect information such as your IP address, device and browser details, the pages you visit and cookie or similar identifiers, and use it to show ads that may be personalized to your interests, to measure ad performance and to prevent fraud. Learn more in Mediavine's privacy policy and its list of ad partners.
Where the law requires it, such as in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and certain US states, Mediavine shows a consent or opt-out prompt, and you can change your choices at any time through that prompt. You can also limit personalized ads through your browser or device settings or through industry opt-out tools such as the Digital Advertising Alliance.
How long we keep information
- Caption lookups and transcripts: cached for a limited time (no more than 30 days).
- Analytics, session recordings and error reports: kept according to each provider's retention settings, then deleted or aggregated.
- Emails you send us: as long as needed to respond and keep a record of the conversation.
International transfers
CaptionGrab is operated from the United States, and our service providers process information in the United States and other countries. By using the Service, your information may be transferred to and processed in countries whose data protection laws differ from those where you live.
Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or get a copy of your personal information, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.
- European Economic Area, United Kingdom and Switzerland: we process personal information on the basis of our legitimate interests in operating, securing and improving the Service, and on your consent where the law requires it. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
- California and other US states with privacy laws: you have the right to know what personal information we collect, and to request that it be deleted or corrected. You also have the right to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information for targeted advertising, which you can do through the ad privacy prompt on the site. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
Because CaptionGrab has no accounts, we usually cannot link analytics data to a specific person. To make a request, email us at [email protected]. We will do our best to find the relevant data and may ask for details to help locate it, such as the approximate date and time of your visit. We respond within the time required by applicable law.
Children
The Service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information, including encrypted connections. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Links to other websites
The Service links to TikTok and other third-party sites. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies, not this one.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the "Updated" date at the top of this page. If a change is significant, we will make reasonable efforts to point it out on the site.
